Why Your "Professional" Store is Secretly Keeping You Broke

Why Your "Professional" Store is Secretly Keeping You Broke

There is a trap that catches almost every ambitious African vendor. It usually happens when you start making your first consistent sales. You look at your business and think, "I need to upgrade. I need to look professional."

So, you go for the biggest name in the world: Shopify.

It feels good. You have the same software as Kylie Jenner. But then, the reality of the "Dollar Trap" hits you.

First, it is the monthly subscription $25 or $39. That doesn't sound too bad until the Naira fluctuates, and suddenly your software bill jumps by 40% in one month. Then, you realize the "Basic" plan doesn't have the features you need.

  • Want to send a receipt? Pay for an app.

  • Want a nice landing page? Pay for a template.

  • Want to remove the "Powered by Shopify" branding? Hire a coder.

By the time you are done, you are spending $100 (₦160,000+) a month just to keep the lights on. For a business in New York, that is pocket change. For a business in Lagos or Abuja, that is the salary of a sales girl.

The Local Contenders: Bumpa and The Rest

So, you look for local options. You find platforms like Bumpa.
They are brilliant because they solve the currency problem. They charge in Naira. They understand that we sell on Instagram.

But even here, you often find yourself forced into a box. Many local platforms charge you a "transaction fee" on top of what the payment gateway (Paystack/Flutterwave) already takes. They take a slice of your hard work just for facilitating the sale. Or they lock the essential marketing tools—like SMS campaigns or custom domains—behind their most expensive "Pro" tiers.

The Sellapage Philosophy: Keep Your Money

This is why we built Sellapage differently. We looked at the market and realized that vendors don't need "more features" they need more profit.

We don't charge you a transaction fee. When you sell a product for ₦50,000, you should keep the money (minus the standard bank processing fee). We don't believe in punishing you for growing.

We also know that in Africa, Data is Life.
Shopify assumes your customers check their emails every hour. You know that's a lie. Your customers are on WhatsApp and SMS. That is why our platform prioritizes SMS Campaigns and Push Notifications over fancy email newsletters that nobody opens.

The Verdict

If you are dropshipping to customers in Canada and the UK, please, use Shopify. It is the best tool for that job.
But if you are selling shoes in Yaba, cakes in Lekki, or fabrics in Kano, stop paying dollar rents for your digital shop.

Your business tool should be like a faithful staff member: hardworking, reliable, and affordable. It shouldn't be a landlord that raises the rent every time the exchange rate changes.
